Rethinking Intelligence — The Engineer’s Way

  • From the realm of causality, where equations and physical laws govern and predict behavior, to that of learning, where intelligence emerges from data-driven association, NAIROlab explores the “continuum of intelligence” through embodied AI (robotics) — from low-level deterministic control based on mechanistic models, to high-level adaptive cognition empirically derived from data.

Embodied AI, From Control to Cognition

  • The deterministic and transparent nature of explicitly engineered models provides safety, structure, and guarantees for reliable control systems.
  • But as tasks rise in abstraction — perception, planning, intent recognition — the adaptive and emergent capabilities of data-driven approaches also become essential since the world is too diverse and unstructured to be fully captured by closed-form equations, hand-crafted feature pipelines, and rules-based heuristics.
  • The adoption of data-driven intelligence to engineering problems is not a rejection of the analytical rigor of explicit models, but rather an extension of it. The higher levels of abstraction and reasoning by modern AI compliment the precision and exactness of physics- or mathematics-based modeling at the lower levels, enabling more complete systems. As paradigms continue to evolve, the goal remains the same — to understand and build systems that act intelligently in the world.
